A Weekend of Reflection at Matthews Lane
It was a mixed weekend for the club in terms of results. Speaking to the captains across all three teams, there was a shared sense of disappointment that not getting over the line always stings. But alongside that was something more important: belief. A real confidence that there is good talent in this squad, and that as the season unfolds, things will come together.
On Saturday, I found myself sitting with a cup of tea at Matthews Lane, watching Blake bowl the first over. In that moment, what stood out was something deeper, just how special it is to have cricket back at your local club.
For many of us, it’s a safe space somewhere we spend our summer weeks after week. Built not by workers, but by volunteers, players, and supporters. That kind of commitment goes far beyond any result… although, on a lighter note, that doesn’t mean we’re happy losing every week.
Jhangir, leading the 2nd XI this week, reflected that the team bowled well and showed discipline in the field. Clear positive foundations were being laid as the group continued to grow together.
Dan, leading the 1st XI, was honest. The biggest frustration was with the bat. But there’s no panic — just belief that the team will respond and grow stronger in the coming weeks.
And then, the real highlight of the weekend.
The launch of the NWCC Wildcats is our first women’s and girls’ team in over 70 years.
Catherine, leading the side, admitted to a few nerves going into the game, which is only natural. Despite the result not going our way, what mattered more was the moment itself. A new chapter for the club. A step forward in building something bigger than just teams building a legacy.
To everyone who came down to support the Wildcats(around 120 + people), thank you. Your presence meant a lot.
We may not have had all the results we wanted this weekend, but what we did have was progress, pride, and a reminder of why we do this.
Onwards and upwards.
