A Week of Cricket, Community, and Momentum at Matthews Lane

It’s been a busy and meaningful week at Matthews Lane. Hosting multiple Varsity games over the Bank Holiday reminded us that this ground is more than just a venue, a space where the community comes together.

Not everything went to plan. The Wildcats had both fixtures canceled due to the weather, but their journey continues on the 10th, and there’s a quiet belief building within that group.

On the pitch, both senior teams delivered two games, two wins, but more importantly, two strong collective performances.

The 1st XI, hosting Hallam, showed balance and control. A quickfire 48 from Hamzah, a composed unbeaten 28 from Bamkin, and a valuable 32 from Nanda helped set 183. What followed was a disciplined bowling display, led by Blake Stocks’ outstanding five-wicket haul for 11 runs, securing a convincing win.

Over at Coal Aston, the 2nd XI were part of a game that truly reflected the spirit of cricket. At 65/5, after Harry contributed a solid 44, the innings felt like it was drifting. Momentum had slipped, and the challenge ahead was clear, but a remarkable 100+ partnership between Arman and Rahim turned the game. Both reached half-centuries, with Rahim finishing unbeaten on 71 to guide the team to 200.

The response with the ball was just as composed. In a tight contest, the team held its nerve to win by 9 runs. David Thorpe (3 wickets) and Arman (2 wickets) led the effort, while Rahim capped off an outstanding all-round performance with crucial overs at the death. Special mention to Chris Riley of Coal Aston for his superb 96 in an innings that almost turned the game single-handedly.

Weeks like this go beyond results. They’re about resilience, shared effort, and the small moments that build something bigger. When even the opposition captain calls it a great game, it says it all, and we couldn’t agree more.

And right now, that momentum is growing.
